Florida is largely a flat peninsula characterized by low-lying coastal plains, sandy beaches, and extensive wetlands. The state is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west, giving it one of the longest coastlines in the United States. Much of southern Florida is dominated by the Everglades, a vast subtropical wetland, while central and northern regions feature gentle rolling terrain and numerous lakes.
