Rivers and Waterways in Utah

Utah’s river systems are shaped by mountains, plateaus, and desert basins, with water flowing toward both the Great Basin and the Colorado River system. Much of western Utah has internal drainage where rivers end in lakes or sinks, while southern and eastern rivers flow into the Colorado River and eventually the Gulf of California. Snowmelt from the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains feeds many rivers. Reservoirs and lakes are essential for water storage, irrigation, and urban supply in this dry state.
